Pescaturismo Burano

Between Fishermen and the Lagoon

Our History

The San Marco Cooperative traces its roots back to 1896, when sixteen fishermen from Burano came together to form the first workers’ cooperative among fishermen in the Venice Lagoon.
Today, the Cooperative includes around 90 member fishermen, engaged in both sea and lagoon fishing using traditional gear such as traps (nasse), set nets, tresse, and cogolli.
Our history tells of the enduring symbiosis between fishermen and the lagoon ecosystem, of passion and expertise passed down from generation to generation, of a strong bond with one’s roots, and of a profound respect for the natural environment.

Our Vision

Since 2010, the Cooperative has been offering experiential fishing tourism excursions to promote awareness of the fishing culture and traditions of the island of Burano, preserved through the use of centuries-old fishing techniques.

Through the diversification of the Cooperative’s activities, we aim to enhance the sustainability of traditional fishing while disseminating knowledge of the historical heritage of our territory.
